The Milled Grind name covers two different wedges. The standard Milled Grind is a conventional shape with the sole milled to a tight tolerance, so bounce and grind come out the same on every head. The Hi-Toe is a different club — taller toe, grooves across the full face, built for opening it up around the green. Both are on this page, so read the model name on the listing.
How the generations differ:
- Milled Grind (2017) — plated face, the original milled sole
- Milled Grind 2 (2019) — raw unplated face, around 50% more spin in the wet than the original
- Milled Grind 3 (2021) — raw face with micro-ribs between the grooves for partial shots
- Milled Grind 4 (2023) — laser-etched diagonal lines replace the ribs, dropping wet spin loss to about 14%
- Hi-Toe, Hi-Toe 2021, Hi-Toe 3 — the high-toe, full-face family
Getting the bounce right matters more than the loft. Higher bounce, 12° and up, suits a steeper swing that takes a real divot and soft ground — which is most of a New Zealand winter. Lower bounce, 9° or 10°, suits a shallower swing and firm turf. Every listing shows loft and bounce in the title.
Rust on a raw face isn't wear. From the Milled Grind 2 on, the face is left unplated so it grips the ball better, and it's meant to rust. What actually wears out is the grooves — a wedge holds its spin for about 65 to 75 rounds, and past that the ball checks less and runs out further. That's why we score the face out of 5 on every wedge and photograph the head it belongs to. On a used wedge, read the face score first.
